Rent a room/ granny flat

Hi
Just wondering have the guidelines changed regarding 'rent a room' relief on a converted garage.
It used to be ok for rent a room but the website seems to have changed their policy now.

The area is connected to our house by a door from the kitchen and it has its own entrance. Need advice please thank you!
 
What type of residence qualifies?
Sole or main residence
Your main residence is your home for most of the year and where friends would expect to find you. You do not have to own the property to claim relief.

The room or rooms must be in a residential property that is located in Ireland. You must use it as your main residence during the tax year.

Self-contained unit
The rented room or rooms can be a self-contained unit within the house, such as a basement flat or a converted garage. If this unit is not attached to the property it cannot qualify for the relief.

Business use or guest accommodation
Your tenants must use the room on a long-term basis. You cannot claim relief on rooms that are used for business purposes.

Short-term stays provided through bed and breakfasts, a guesthouse or online booking sites do not qualify for relief.
 
Does it have to have a door that goes directly into the house or can it have its own front door?
 
So an attached granny flat looks like its ok for Rent a room. Brill :)
Apart from tax, as it's a self contained unit the renter is entitled to full tenancy rights, and you'll have to register with RTB, unless you specify otherwise. Make sure you research that aspect and how to avoid it.
Also, double check your home insurance before renting. It's a bit different to just letting a bedroom which is generally covered.

I'm not certain this is correct.

Either the tenancy is 'rent-a-room'-type or it's not.
