In probably what is one of the most bizzare stories for a long time, a Russian journalist has faked his own death to apparently expose a plot on his life.

https://www.rte.ie/news/world/2018/0530/967127-babchenko-ukraine/

"An emotional Mr Babchenko, who has been a critic of Russian President Vladikir Putin, thanked the Ukrainian security service for saving his life."

Im wondering did he think he was actually dead at some point?

The Ukrainian security services faked his death to apparently expose a Russian plot to kill him?!?!

So in the end, nobody died or was killed, but worlds media is covering this story - not because he was killed, but because he was not killed!

This Russian spy/hitman/novichok story is wearing thin in my eyes. It would all be funny if people's lives were not at stake. I do fear for soccer supporters attending the WC next month.

You cannot help thinking that most of Ukraine's problems are self inflicted.
They didn't choose to be next door to Russia.
While their democracy is far from perfect it is not endemically corrupt or, as the Russians claim, Fascist.

AT the time of the break up of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was according to the Communist Era statistics slightly wealthier than Poland. Today Poland has a per capita GDP almost three times that of Ukraine.

So Ukraines failure over the last 30 years is truly staggering.

Ukraine has enormous agricultural capacity. It has rain, sun and the black earth plains are among the most fertile land in the world. But Ukrainians would rather endlessly debate reform of land holding arrangements that actually farm.

Ukrainians have first world levels of education, but have completely failed to develop their country politically, economically or socially.

While Ukrainian political groupings change their names with bewildering frequency there is a strong Nazi (rather than Fascist) element in Ukranian politics. The Ukranian National Union celebrates the Ukranian forces that fought with the Nazis, and some years ago announced an intention to form a Nazi party. It was among the organisers of the Maidan protests.

The Congress of Ukranian Nationalists who polled over 23% of the vote in elections at their peak in 2002, have a garbled ideology, but suppor for the Nazi war criminal John Dmanjuk, is a big thing for them

Right Sector is an amalgam of football hooligans and the Social-National Assembly (never National Socialist !) who really don't know what they believe, but are willing to fight to the the death for it anyway.

The far right National Corps, was formed as a political party by members of the National Guard. They don't describe themselves as Neo-Nazi, though others do.

Svoboda, celebrate the Galiacia (part of western Ukraine) Division of the Waffen SS. They only won 10% of the vote at their peak.

And they engage in fake assassination to pin blame on their foes in obvious attempts to discredit them.
I wonder, just as an after thought, and considering the very dubious claims of the UK government of Russian involvement in the Skirpal two, is it a possibility that it was actually Russian agents working for Ukraine that were responsible for Salisbury? And not Russia itself?
The plot thickens....

Great post.
This is a good analysis of the question "Is Ukraine Fascist?" .
