Is this Swiss the Greatest?

No question the best in mens tennis (For Duke: In the modern era ;)) and definitely a contender for greatest ever sports person. Getting to 20 Grand Slams is a first, but all the more impressive is the fact that Nadal and Djokovic have 16 & 12 titles each.

Out of interest, are you aware that an Irish woman won [broken link removed]?

Speaking of the lassies, 'twould be very remiss of me not to mention that I was very impressed by the winner of the Oz Ladies also!

Laver's 200 singles titles are the most in tennis history. This included his all-time men's record of 10 or more titles per year for seven consecutive years (1964–70). He excelled on all of the court surfaces of his time: grass, clay, hard, carpet, and wood/parquet.

Despite being banned from playing the Grand Slam tournaments for the five years prior to the Open Era, he won 11 singles titles. Laver is the only player to twice achieve the calendar-year Grand Slam, in 1962 and 1969, and the latter remains the only time a man has done so in the Open Era.
Would Roger be able to to play tennis on a carpet?

If we count our four legged friends, I have argued before on AAM that Arkle was the best sports person ever. From a narrow human perspective Roger is up there, I agree.

Elac,

Maybe you is right.

I've been thinking a bit about her. She really has such a beautiful................................backhand.

Great achievement by Tiger Woods. Is Golf a proper sport though? It's a game and it's skillful but it's just hitting a ball while you go for a walk.

Active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition
Interestingly no reference to skill in this definition. Professional golf certainly is competitive but hardly long on physical exertion I agree. Still greatest comeback since Napoleon, nearly on a par with Lazarus:rolleyes:
