thinking of going to majorca for a week in september and having majorca palma as our base , hope to make day trips then to other locations

heard its about the most expensive place you can visit in all of spain , is this true ?

is a week a bit too long for an island which is smaller than donegal

I don't know how expensive/cheap Palma is but be prepared to pay tourist tax @ €10.00 per day each on arrival.

Friends of mine just back from Majorca, stayed in Alcudia and not their first visit, they found it has become much more expensive than it used to be and practically same costs for meals out as Ireland. In a conversation with their hotel manager he said it was because of demand as Majorca is perceived to be much safer than other resorts that were popular so basically they have increased prices because they can and people will still pay.

I've been to Majorca twice. Definitely not too small for a week. There is loads to see and do. We stayed in the north, Alcudia and Pollencia. Really liked Pollencia. Prices to eat out in the high end are similar or just a bit less than in Ireland. Lots of places away from that are a bit less expensive. Its important to have a way to travel around the island, get to see the place beyond the resorts.

From http://www.etoa.org/
"The cost of the new ‘eco tax’ will vary depending on the hotel’s star rating. Hotels with a one to three-star rating will attract a €1 (79p) charge for four -and five-star hotels will attract a €2 (£1.58) levy per person per day, though the tax is halved for stays of nine nights or more. So a family of four travelling to Majorca staying for a fortnight in a four-star hotel can expect to pay over £70."

Doesn't appear to be €10 per day pp.

is public transport sufficient to get you around to see the interesting towns and sights , id have thought it might be in a small island ?

prefer not to hire a car

on the cost thing , booked an apartment very central to downtown palma for seven nights , 945 euro , expensive but it looks very nice , flights for two adults and a toddler with ryanair in september come in at 497 return , ryanair are not at all cheap for less taken routes but they were still 150 quid cheaper than aer lingus

hard to see the holiday being done for less than two grand which in my book is a lot for a september trip

Palma is expensive. I have stayed there on a number of occasions. Maybe don't stay in Palma for the week.
Consider Port de Pollenca or Soller for maybe 5 nights and Palma for 2. Quite often flights arrive late in to Palma.

When you arrive at Palma airport you can get the bus outside arrivals, across the bus park to the stop beside the outside escalators and under the cement awning. Bus no 1.

This bus runs along the coast, then in to the town and then back down again to the coast. If you are travelling inland to other locations or other coastal locations you get the regional buses at Placa de Espana. The airport bus stops here. Both the train station and bus station are located under the park at Placa de Espana. Great bus station. Buses leave from their bays with good signage. You will pay max €8 per person to travel to the other side of the island.

Port de Pollenca is beautiful. Day trips from there to Pollenca old town or Alcudia old town or on to Alcudia beach. We stayed at Hoposa Apartments Daina.

Soller is smaller and also beautiful. You can get the bus here or the old cowboy style wooden train from the nearby station. This is a trip in itself. You can go to old town Soller or onwards on an even narrower wooden train to the Port of Soller.

thanks , very informative and helpful

i was looking on booking.com and tbh , porta de pollenca isnt any cheaper for accomodation than what i have booked already in the capital , perhaps eating out etc is however , add to that , we had planned to make trips to the most scenic coastal locations and porta de pollenca may be a better choice than palma for this , negotiating a large city in itself takes up time

I'm heading to Port de Pollenca this Friday with 3 kids.
I haven't planned on hiring a car but may do so for a few days while I'm there.

Can anyone recommend places to eat or things to do?
Is it a good location for snorkeling?

when i think of what myself and my better half paid for a four day trip to lisbon in mid may 2014 , the cost of holidays has really shot up , we stayed in a four star hotel on the o connell st equivelent of lisbon for four nights for 600 quid ( for the two of us ) including the cost of flights , now granted the flights were booked six months in advance and one of those ryanair giveaway deals but it was still for nothing

eating out was so cheap too in lisbon

walk is good. Just about long and hilly enough to make you sweat a bit. There's also a few other pleasant ones. Get a map from the Information Centre. There'a bar in the main square full of locals palying dominoes which is worth going to for local cuisine but may not be up to scratch for the sprogs.

At the roundabout you can get the local bus to the old town of Pollenca and also to the old town of Alcudia. Both lovely for strolling around. I didn't really like seaside Alcudia.

We were staying half board so just had snack type meals when out. Best bet is to log on to the Tripadvisor forum for Port de Pollenca.

pollencia and port de pollencia are two different locations , did you stay in pollencia ( the old town ) , if so , how convenient was transport to the beach , i believe its about five miles from the coast

Above is the Tripadvisor forum on Port de Pollenca. Lots of information and frequently asked questions.

Here is the old town Pollenca forum.

Your right, we stayed in the port. I have no idea about the public transport, we cycled one day into the old town. Not too far but a busy dusty road.

Taxis are plentiful, I cannot remember about the price, we were sharing those costs between 4 adults so it wasn't an issue. It might be different for a family.

Great holiday.
My advice is that unless you are staying right in the heart of port de pollencia then rent a car.
Even if you are I'd still rent a car.
A taxi from the airport is around €80 so €160 for the round trip. You can rent a car for the week for a little more than that and Polleca and Alcudia are well worth seeing.
