A family of.4 . . 2adults. . 2children . .
I have pre existing condition . .ie breast cancer but have been in remission for 10yrs plus . . . Husband has orthopaedic issues and will prob in future need knee replacement. We are both nearing 50yrs old

Currently with VHI nurses plan.select as one adult is in the hse .
Children are 4 & 2 . Need guidance on plans as am afraid to move as my husband is afraid of the waiting times.on new polices. He won't hopefully be needing any surgery for a few years and day to day health expenses are not important .
Hoping for some. guidance please.

grass,

Husband;
Firstly, for your husband, VHI has 80% cover for orthopaedic surgery in private and hi-tech hospitals for the majority of plans including Nurses Plan
Select. If he chooses either Mater Private or Blackrock Clinic for surgery, if and when it occurs, they don't pass the shortfall onto the patient so in effect they fully cover this type of surgery. Other private hospitals may charge the shortfall amount which could be a few thousand.
Laya healthcare fully cover orthopaedic surgery in all private and hi-tech hospitals. So for that reason I would recommend the following Laya plan;

1. Simplicity; price 1087pa; all public, private(including private room) + hi-tech hospitals, max inpatient excess 100 x 2 per year for admissions,
day case 50 per visit. Orthopaedic surgery fully covered in private and hi-tech hospitals - no shortfalls or excess applies.
Good day to day cover included on this plan, first 100 not allowed.

You never lose cover if you switch plans, you keep the same level as before - ie 80% orthopaedic cover in private or hi-tech hospitals. A waiting
time of 2 years only applies to any extra cover on the new plan, in relation to any pre-existing illnesses. So, after 2 years with Laya, full cover
will apply to him for orthopaedic surgery. If he requires this surgery before the 2 years is complete, he could avoid the 20% shortfall by choosing
either Blackrock Clinic or Mater Private. After 2 years with Laya, he could choose any private hospital for surgery at that stage.
This option for 'Simplicity Plan' is also open to you. It has lower excesses for admissions and day case visits, plus day to day cover included.

Children;
For the 2 children, I would suggest they stay with VHI and switch to cheaper plan as follows;
1. One Plus Plan; price 137 per child; all public, private and hi-tech hospitals covered, excess 125.

Wife; self
For yourself, you could also choose Simplicity plan with Laya. VHI allow children to be insured on their own, just an adult is named on the policy.
If you wanted to stay with VHI, there are a few options to consider as follows;
1. One Plan; price 1095pa; all public, private and hi-tech hospitals covered, excess 125. No day to day cover.
2. PMI 37 13; price 1114pa; all public, private and hi-tech hospitals covered, excess 100. No day to day cover.
3. Company Plan Plus Level 1.3; price 1131pa; all public, private and hi-tech hospitals covered. excess 150, good day to day cover included.

Nurses Plan Select is overpriced for the level of cover included. There are other better priced plans with similar or extra cover included.
Plenty of savings to be made without losing any cover.

Thanks so much Snowyb, will check it all out. There are just so many plans out there offering different things . .but thanks again.

Could I pose a related query please.
Renewal for wife and self. Both aged 63 with many years of PHI.And in good health. Looking to renew. Currently have Glohealth NetMore100 plan. Would like to continue to provide for good Orthopaedic (and Cardiac) cover. Not pushed about day-to-day benefits, although some Physiotherapy cover woulf be useful. Premium has risen so have been advised to opt for NetMore 300 with Glohealth. Private Hopspital cover in Cork only of interest. Appreciate advice re any other suitable plans in €800-€1000 range per adult.

riya99,

There are 2 options worth considering that cover both private hospitals in Cork, Mater Private Cork and Bons Secours Cork.

1. Glohealth Kick Off Plus; price 825; public, selected private hospitals. Private Excess 300 per admission.
2. Laya Flex 250 Explore; price 949; all public, all private and all hi-tech hospitals covered; 250 private excess.

There are also 2 options worth considering, which just cover Mater Private Cork, no cover for Bons Secours. Day to day cover included on 1 plan.

1. Laya Precision 150 Connect; price 858pa; public, selected private, some hi-tech cover. 150 private excess, no day to day cover.
2. Laya Precision 150 Total; price 968pa; public, selected private, some hi-tech cover, 150 private excess. Good day to day included.

Edit; Note I forgot to mention, all Glohealth plans have a 2000 euro co-payment for orthopedic surgery in private or hi-tech hospitals.
There is no co-payment with Laya plans.

Last year I took your welcome advice Snowyb and opted for GloHealth Kickoff Plus. Unavailable this year and so would again appreciate your advice. Wife and self. Each 64. Good health. Many years PHI. Private cover in Cork (Bons and / or Mater private) required. Good Orthopedic and Cardiac cover. Day to day benefits not really important, although physiotherapy cover useful. Some cover abroad useful too, but not vital. I am open to high excess and co-payment. Regards. Riya99
