Zadar is a beautiful old city with lovely squares and waterfront area - definitely a pleasant place to stay - perhaps not as spectacular as Dubrovnik or Split, but certainly nice
For beaches, as with the rest of Southern Croatia there's lovely coastline, very clear water but very little in the way of sandy beaches - it's mostly rocky coast/pebbly beaches
