Whilst part of the ecoomy has grown up, it seems to me that the 'public sector' unions are about making sure that that public sector entities continue as a trough from which they can extract as much via their snouts as possible.

Wille Walsh was effectively escorted from the terminal on the basis of bringing change that does not suit the unions.

Now that he has been given the CEO of British Airways does it not highlight a problem in dealing with change?

Hanley suffered the same fate .. and the bizarre way the health services are run increases the 'death' rate from organising hospitals as a 9-5 monday to friday operation instead of 24.7 suggested by Hanley.

I dont know why anybody would take a role in change in the public sector in this country.

I think it is unfair to blame the unions for this one WD, to me it looked like Bertie got rid of him because he was afraid of loosing votes in north Dublin.
It's a shame that by far the most capable CEO of any semi-state body has been lost. There is a precedent for this though, wasn't Eddie O'Connor sacked as head of Bord Na Mona because he bought some wine for the board of directors and earned more than a civil servant should. The fact that he turned a turf cutting operation into a vibrant and sustainable company didn't come into it. Now he runs Airtricity and is worth millions. As far as I remember it was then Minister Michael Lowry who was, according to himself, "cleaning up the cosy cartels in the semi-state sector."that gave him the push. The Labour party hated him because he wanted to privatise the company.
Nice to see that putting short term political gain ahead of long term national interest is a cross party phenomenon.

Isn't it always the same way? It is the unfortunate thing about democracy - it promotes short term thinking. There is no reward for thinking about the future. Same bloody thing with the health scandal. It'd put you off voting ever again.
