Which medium priced 06 car to buy?

Considering changing up from an 01 Golf and was wondering if any of you have any good reports on any cars that I might consider?

I am thinking of staying with a Golf but should I also consider likes of Astra's, Focus etc? They might be easier to service with cheaper parts over the next few years.
 
What budget do you have ?
What mileage do you do annually ?
What sort of driving do you do (city/country/long/short trips) ?
What do you need to carry (2 people, + 2,4,6 kids) ?
Do you want a hot-hatch or something sensible ?

I drive a Nissan Note and i absolutely love it, can't recommend it enough. Bought an 06 one last year for about 14K. It's very spacious and slightly higher than your average car so better view. Very handy features (for example a high number of windscreen-wiper speeds) and very smooth gear transition. There are lots of them on the road these days and I'd say that's because they're so handy.
