Can anyone suggest a couple of good competitive websites/companies for travel insurance. Policy required would be 12 month trip with hazardous sports etc included and covered! (long stay, not a multi-trip policy)

Don't forget that if you are away for several months and own a house the standard domestic home/contents policy may need reviewing as most of them limit the owner occupier vacancy period and don't cover rental situations either.
Don't forget if you are a member of the VHI (say via work) there's a good deal going with them.
On second thoughts scratch that, didn't read your post correctly. A mate of mine got a deal with aer lingus for a long stay snowboarding (3 months) that was quite reasonable.
