Hi,

Can anyone tell me the difference between using the above in the construction of an attic conversion.
What are the pros and cons for each. What would you recommend.
Total novice so I haven't a clue.
Thanks

From watching a recent Grand Designs the glulam beam is made from glueing many layers of wood strips together and it can be bent to from a convex roof structure. This is probably also possible with steel but perhaps there is a significant cost difference. it may also be a question of which is more easily sourced in your area. I have only experience of using the steel beam so cannot comment on personal preference.

Glulam gives much greater flexibility in terms of curved designs and wider spans, but can be a bit more bulky than steel. That said, you can make a feature of gluelam beams whereas most people will box in steel.
