Buying a commercial jeep and wondering what is the best approach to take? Buying as soletrader so will be claiming the VAT back. My query is what way should I tax and insure as I will be using the Jeep for private use also. A lot of contradicting information our there so looking for some clarification. Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light :)

What you're proposing is illegal. See here.

To tax a commercial vehicle, you must complete for RF111A, and have it witnessed by a Garda. By signing it you declare that the vehicle:

will be used only as a goods carrying vehicle in the course of my business/trade and will not be used at any time for social, domestic or pleasure purposes.

OP, tax and insure your jeep as a commercial.
Get the garda to sign the form as above and get on with your life!

I have one 5 years, no gard has ever stopped me and asked about it. How can they prove you are not coming/going from a job?
This is not an enforced law.

Yet another law that has fallen between the cracks because it is never, ever policed. No-one ever sees tractors in the pub car-park or the rows of commercial vehicles (vans, pick-ups, SUVs) parked outside Tescos full of kids.
