Shoplifting Conviction

Hi,
Does anyone out there know how long a person has a conviction to their name? I stupidly stole from a shop 14 years ago. Spoke to various Gardai about it and have received mixed responses. Some say I will have it on my record for 20 years and there is nothing I can do, others say I can go to court or get a solicitor to go to court and get it deleted from the system. I have no other convictions. Thanks.
 
Thanks very much for your help. I contacted Garda HQ a few months back and they said all records were now kept in the Vetting Office in Tipperary. I rang them and they said it should not be still on the system and maybe through legal aid I could go to court or be represented in court. My local Gardai said I'm entitled to a clean record. I contacted Citizens Advice and they didn't have a clue. I was 17 or 18 when it happened. I know it makes a difference which age I was.

I wish someone would have a straight answer for me.
