Dublin is shaped both by its natural and man-made features. Just as the River Liffey shaped the historic development of Dublin, the provision of infrastructure plays a vital role in the economic and social development of our city as well as subtly shaping its character and identity.
The mobility of people in Dublin is set to change over the next number of years. Satisfying transport demand will require a mix of solutions including efficient and integrated public transport, and improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure to develop sustainable solutions that will enable people to shift from private to public transport.
The RDS is delighted to welcome Mr Michael Philips to discuss how a sustainable transportation system plays an important part in how the city functions, and how, through careful planning and design, it can influence how we experience and enjoy our city.
Mr Michael Philips has been Dublin City Engineer since 1998 and also Director of Traffic since 2006. These roles involve the development and implementation of strategies for all engineering infrastructure to meet the needs of the city and the region. Some projects undertaken during this period include the Dublin Port Tunnel, Dublin Bay Wastewater Treatment Works and Quality Bus Corridors. Currently, the development of a City Centre Mobility Plan and the promotion of sustainable modes of transport are the main focus to achieving a successful mobility policy in the Dublin Region.
