I've just started pricing up (service based) work. Have just specified precise service and provided cost. I have not mentioned payment terms at this stage. All of my competitors require payment prior to handing over the documentation which is the end result of this particular service.

Am I leaving myself open by not providing the customer with my 'terms of business' at this stage? Any pointers as I'm fairly green on this side of things.

I would normally specify terms on a quotation but often times if I dont I will state the terms by way of a thank you/order confirmation following receipt of an order and before work commences.

Think its a good idea to state that 'payment in advance is required please' on quotations - have had plenty of people say "oh I thought I was getting credit" - and use it as a bargaining tool - after they've agreed to the work. I think better to state from the off so there's no 'confusion'.

up front with everything especially clear about payment details.
If yor work is up to scatch/on time then you should have it a bit easier
