Planning Refused - Right to Light!

Afternoon,

Just wanted to see if anyone can shine some light on this issue (pardon the pun!)
We have a semi-d. house and went for a large ground floor and small 1st floor extension. We want to put in a 3rd bedroom and a bathroom upstairs. Our immediate neighbor (the attached house to the south of us) did'nt lodge any objections.
However, the planning was refused on the basis that the 1st floor extension would 'impose a burden of right to light to the house to the south of us'.
Now think about that! How can we possibly be taking light from a house to the south of us? He is direclty to our south so we cannot possibly take any direct or indirect light from the back of his property.
I'm baffled by this and would welcome any comments. Thanks.

Re: Planning Refused - Right to Light!!

At these latitudes in the middle of summer the sun rises in the North East and sets in the North West...so it is possible that on 21st June...early in the morning and late in the evening...that your extension might clip a little light from a corner of his site.
