My father entered a nursing home last year. Can he offset the cost of his nursing home costs against his tax? His income from his private pension plus his income from his state pension is circa €50k per annum gross. His nursing home costa are €50k per annum.
If he is allowed an allowance is it given at his 20% tax rate or the 41% tax rate?
Is there a special form that he needs to complete?

I suspect you might get more responses if you posted this query in the Taxation forum.

It is offset against his higher tax rate first.

He can apply to the revenue to advance the tax credits for the year instead of him having to apply for tax back at the end of the year.

I am in a similar position. Does a person need actual paid receipts for the revenue or will a statement or letter from the nursing home suffice?

I am not sure,

1 letter from the revenue outlining what was paid in previous year should be sufficient for claiming tax back on money already paid out.

I am not sure how to proceed with tax in advance before payment is made. You would definitely need a letter from the nursing home.
