Looking at today's Irish Times article on Goodbody exits, I was wondering why until lately large companies didn't have in-house fund managers for - at least guiding if not always authorized to be directing - their employee pension funds, investment funds, etc . . .

Big companies can well afford the overhead of a dedicated bureau doing this and having an experienced old hand leading it all makes sense.

I'd say a lot of old bulls in the fund management pen willl be looking around for similar lush valleys where they may graze away their final investment seasons far from the din of the IFSC trading rooms and the distractions of well-fleshed heifers . . .

Likely cheaper to pay one of the big providers an all-in fee for management and administration. Big companies also have no problem paying over the odds to transfer risk.
