Surely blocking these texts can't be beyond their abilities.

They can block them but it requires people to report them. Some mobile providers have a 5xxxx nunber you can report spam/phising texts to.

Well said! This approach alone would probably stop most scams in their tracks. Maybe, as an additional precaution, also do it on a different device just in case the initial one has been more widely compromised.

I believe the Uk has gotten or is about to get better, at doing this based on listening to radio 4 on this topic
