Government on course to exceed housing targets in 2023 and 2024

Great news, the Government is on course to exceed housing targets in 2023 and 2024.
"Providing an update on residential housing supply for the first nine months of the year alongside Tánaiste Micheál Martin and Mininster for Housing Darragh O’Brien, Mr Varadkar said based on completion and commencement trends to date, output is likely to exceed this year’s target of 29,000 units and next year’s 33,000 target"
an improvement alright...but a long way away from the 50,000 units per year thats actually needed.

Reason for this is that the original estimates were based on 2016 census and not updated in line with obvious population increases.
Secondly, the HINDA (housing needs assessment) process run by NPF doesn't properly take into account housing needs like incoming economic migrants, asylum seekers, and crucially, adult children living in the family home, all of which are considered to not have a housing need. Thus the estimates on housing need trend towards underestimation of actual housing need.
