Getting rid of lime in water supply

Hope someone can help. We are renovating a house in Co. Waterford in a very limey area. People are forever having problems with washing machines, kettles etc. and I'd like to know if anyone has experience of a system for eliminating this (if you can!).

We are putting in a Stanley Range where the hot water will be coming from the cooker and we want to protect the system from clogging up. We had someone out who was talking about a system that uses salt etc., but then someone who lives there says they have something like that but it dosen't work and they have to overhaul their Aga to the tune of £2000...

Can anyone direct me please??

I bought a Culligan Euro Softstyle (what a name?) watersoftener from a local builders merchant complete with 2 bags of salt and the necessary fittings for €450 last year. I installed it myself and I'm confident the system will pay for itself in due course with prolonged service from domestic appliances etc. I'm told that if a system is installed on an old plumbing system it can gradually descale the old lime, stripping it back over time as the lime is absorbed into the softer water. You could get a system fitted by a specialist supplier for less than €1000 (inl. softener) and I'd recommend it to anyone in a hard water area. If the machine is working properly and periodically inspected it should give no trouble.

Thanks for the reply Carpenter, I feel a little easier about the lime issue. I'm sure if we monitor it regularly it should be ok and everything, pipes, appliances etc., will be new - so I'll be keen to keep them in good order.

I retro fitted my softener after 6 years and the amount of lime that had built up in that time was substantial, especially on the wash basin taps and in the toilet cisterns.
