My husband and I (both self-employed) are thinking of selling Dublin house and buying a house in Derry - hopefully we'll be mortgage free!! Any information regarding the costs associated with buying a house in the north would be much appreciated ie stamp duty etc. Many thanks in advance.

costs are (as with mosts places) stamp duty which is 0% < £125k, 1% £125K to £250K, 3% £250k to £500k & 4% above £500k. There are disadvantaged areas for which there is no stamp duty. Estate agents fees are generally 1% but can be negotiated down in some cases. Solictors fees range between £600 and £1000 incl VAT. You get what yoiu pay for with Solicitors!!
Some other costs if you do buy - rates which, depenedant on area, are have risen on average 8% per year for the last few years and soon to be introduced in some form is water charges.

The new water charges will be related directly to the value of the house and not to how much water you use.
