Irish Life Health Changing Health Insurance companies

Ok, this is a dumb question.

I have health insurance with Aviva which seems to jump in price every year. I can get a comparable policy with other companies for about 400 less, but I have one concern.
I'm generally healthy and have rarely claimed on my insurance. I do have a minor kidney issue which pops up every few years in blood tests, but is not a major issue. It usually means a visit to a kidney specialist who tells me that its ok after a few xrays/ultrasounds, and to keep it monitored.
If I change insurance companies, will they see this as a "existing condition" and not cover me for it for a period? I dont want to find myself needing more serious treatment in a few years and not having cover all just to save a few hundred on premiums.

For the insurance nerds out there - I am currently on Aviva Level 2 Health Excess. its currently up for renewal at 1296.00. I can get what looks like a better policy Leya Flex 250 Plus for about 850. I know I can downgrade to Aviva Health Value Plan for about 950, but the Flex 250 plan looks a better plan.

Hi JohnJay,

Firstly, if you choose a plan with similar hospital cover, you will continue as before, with no waiting imposed for pre-existing conditions. The Laya plan Flex 250 Plus has similar cover to Aviva Level 2 health excess, so no waiting applies. This is a good plan worth considering, the only difference is the hospital excess, from 125 to 250 for every hospital admissions or day case.
Another plan worth considering with Laya is called Simply Connect price 999 pa. This plan has a day case excess of 50 per visit and an inpatient hospital excess of 150 for the first 2 admissions to a private or hi-tech hospital.

Plenty of savings on offer without compromising on cover.

thanks for your reply snowyb

Simply Connect looks like a good plan alright. Its not on the Laya website though, so is it discontinued? Or is it just hidden somewhere?

I'm not awfully worried about excess. Thankfully I have not spent a day or night in hospital since I was born almost 40 years ago. And if I do in future, there's a good chance it wont be in a private hospital anyway.

Simply Connect is a new plan with Laya, which started on June 1st 2015, so it should be updated on their website soon. It's also a corporate plan, designed and aimed at the business sector, but open to everyone if you know about it. Good price. The main advantage is the low day case excess, 50 per visit. Apart from that, there is a max amount of 300 per year you can claim for day to day expenses, in total. That restriction may not suit everyone.
However, overall if the excess amount of 250 is not an issue, Flex 250 Plus is very good value all round.
Switching providers can be done by phone, straight forward.

Thanks again Snowyb
Are Laya's prices increasing on July 1st? My existing policy with Aviva is not up until 7th July. If I put a start date of 1st of July for Aviva, it quotes me 846.00 (70.50 per month). If I put a start date of 30th June, it works out at €694. I know this is only for 11 months, but works out at 63 p/m. Its not a lot, but still €77 more in my pocket!

No, there's no price increase from July 1st but there is a 10% online discount at the moment. It looks like this will stop from July 1st onwards. Fair play to you for spotting it. Every little helps.

Ah, that explains it. I better get booking.
694 for 11 months vs 1296 for 12 with Aviva is a decent saving, even if my excess has risen a bit. It shows its worth shopping around.
In fairness to Laya, they seem to be unbeatable at this price point of the market.
