Hello,

Looking for some advice on buying a used car from the UK - private sale.

I know I have to pay VRT (CO2 & NOX Levy) on the car and I can estimate these on revenue.ie

I am not familiar though with the Customs Duty and any VAT liable.

I know the Customs Duty is 10% of the purchase price and the VAT is 23% of the purchase price but as I am buying privately, there is no invoice.

And when paying the VRT here, it asks for an invoice.

Has anyone purchase a used UK car privately and registered it here?

Thanks.

Detailed here. Duty is 10% unless the vehicle meets rules of origin as UK manufactured. Both duty and VAT are calculated on the price paid, they will look for evidence of payment in the absence of a business invoice. Get the seller to issue a receipt.

VRT will be calculated based on what Revenue believe is the market price of the vehicle here, and many suggest they estimate on the high side. You can appeal that after paying by providing evidence of similar vehicles on sale here for less.
