BMW 523i brake light warning light

the brake light warning light on the dash that tells you a bulb has gone, wont go out after replacing the bulb, does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem.
 
The BMW's (AFAIK) have a warning light that is activated by a sensor that detects the depth of the brake pads - I'd say have this checked out, as well as the entire system (master brake cylinder, fluid etc)

Jiggle the bulb and make sure it's seated properly, seriously... It can light but still not cancel the dash warning light if not pushed in properly.
 
Had a similar problem for ages, it only went away when the car did despite being checked during servicing.
