Hi. Its this time of year again and I would appreciate any advice on renewing my mums policy. She currently has Total Health Complete with a renewal date of 1st May which will cost 1143.66 to renew. She also has a medical card which she may loose or become a doctor only card due to circumstances changing so need to keep this in mind. I feel the quote is reasonable but want advice to confirm that there is nothing better or similar cheaper. She is reasonably healthy , has had two specialist appointments this year but would like to keep options open for private hospitals if necessary. She lives in Dublin. Thanks in advance.

Have you compared your current plan against LAYA Simplicity on the HIA.ie comparison tool?

You can see the Simplicity breakdown here:

That's another very good plan from LAYA which has private and high-tech cover, and which would be about €50 a year cheaper for annual premium.
Over the course of the year it can work out cheaper than other plans if you foresee several in patient claims. This is because you will only have to pay 2 excesses even if you attend 5-10 times.

Meath Lady,

The 2 best priced alternative options are as follows;

1. Simplicity (as already mentioned be odyssey06) price 1087pa; same hospital cover as before but with lower excesses, inpatient excess 100 x 2
max per year, day case excess 50 per visit. This plan also has good day to day cover as before, but the only slight negative is the outpatient excess is 100, ie. the first 100 is not allowed on day to day expenses. This is balanced overall by the cheaper premium 1087pa.

2. Simply Connect Plus; price 1169pa; same hospital cover as before with lower excesses, private/hi-tech inpatient excess 150 x 1 max per year,
day case excess 50 per visit. This plan has good day to day cover as before with a 1 euro excess, the maximum refund for day to day expenses is restricted to 500 per year.

Both plans have lower hi-tech shortfalls also.

Thanks Odyssey and Snowyb. Studying these now and just realise that the policy she has is in fact Total Health Complete 175 and not Total Health Complete. Any further comments or advise would be appreciated.

Meath Lady,

The main difference in the following 2 plans with Laya, is lower excesses for inpatient admissions, day case and lower shortfalls for hi-tech cover.
The difference in price is less than 100 overall for either plan. Details as follows;

1. Simplicity Plan; price 1087pa. (as already mentioned) lower inpatient excess 100 x 2 max per year in private/hi-tech hospitals. Day case excess
50 per visit to private/hi-tech hospitals. Good day to day cover with a 100 excess, ie. the first 100 is not allowed for day to day medical expenses with this plan. This plan also covers a private room in a private hospital, which is a big plus in terms of value for money.

2. Simpy Connect; price 1063pa; same hospital cover as before, lower inpatient excess 150 x 2 max per year in private/hi-tech hospitals. Day case excess 50 per visit in private/hi-tech hospitals. Good day to day cover, 1 euro excess but the maximum refund is 300 per year.

As I already mentioned above, the main reason for switching to either of these 2 plans is based on the lower excess amounts. This can be a very
significant difference in reality, for example a day case procedure in a hi-tech hospital will cost 200 with her current plan, whereas it will just cost 50 euro on the 2 alternative plans. Plenty to consider before making any decisions.
