Hi,
I need to put up a fence (wooden posts and 3 bar rail)
Does anyone have any advice on this,

Can i hire any sort of tool that will hammer the post into the ground or will I have to use a sledge etc
How far should the post be apart etc

Its 59 metres long,

Any help would be great
Cheers

Re: Advice on errecting a fence

Sounds a big job. Any tool will be tractor mounted. To drive posts by hand would be quite hard , especially for post and rail. It would be difficult to keep the posts dead straight.
In my youth to drive posts we first used a long pointed iron bar to make a hole in the ground. Then used a heavy wooden mallet to drive in the posts.
I know the Farm relief services do these sorts of jobs but I am not sure how much they would charge.
What part of the country are you in.

I'm in carlow, I've already checked out the local dudes for price for labour etc, anything from 14e - 25e per meter (including wood)

the wood on its own is about 350 euro, I don't have the cash at the minute to get someone to do it, but I need a fence up asap to keep the dog in

it will be a cattle gate for the moment as well:)

That's a long fence for DIY, I know FRS do an excellent job where this work is concerned, they have a tractor mounted post driver which will ensure the posts are driven square and true. It would be worth getting a quote anyway.

Thanks lads,

just rang the 14euro a metre guy, and so happens he works for farm relief:)

going to bite the bullet and get him because if anything happened the dog, then my new home would be his old one:)

What about those electric boundary fences for dogs. The ones where the dog gets a shock from a collar if he goes near it. Should work out cheaper and I cannot see how a post and rail will stop a dog anyway..

Some people might consider this an extreme solution to securing their property and retaining a pet! What advantage does this have over fencing?

a) cost effective
b) dog is allowed to roam a large area and not be tied up.
c) dogs are not stupid. If this happens to them once or twice they get the message. As they get a warning tone from the collar they know they are approaching the forbiden area.
d) a couple of minor shocks are preferrable to being run over , shot or poisoned if they stray.

Forgot to mention, I live in a country lane, so the fence needs to be stock proof

I was going to tak on mesh inside the fence to stop the dog getting out.

Bertson - OK, you need a fence to keep livestock out, but if you've just moved to 'the country' have you considered obedience training and 'socialising' for the dog. This would remove any need for worry as it would co-habit peacefully with livestock and not stray. Then you can focus on installing a fence suitable and robust enough to keep beasts off your land - and advice and link on that was given by a poster above. Just sounds as if you are trying to create a perimeter which will do everything at once and that probably doesn't exist!
