We just got engaged and the ring was purchased over in New Jersey. Trying to get it valued here so that we can get it insured and no jewellers that we have asked are interested in doing it because we havent bought the ring here.

We have the ring valued in $ but the insurance company want a valuation carried out here to get the european value here.

Ive heard that Weirs do it but it takes 12 weeks !! Please help.

We got ours valued at Applebys (just off Grafton street in Dublin). At first they also said they don't do it but when i pointed out that FBD has specifically named them they changed their mind.

Is FBD your insurance company?

Got a ring valued by Keanes Jewellers in Cork. Next day Service. We gave them the information regarding the cut, cwt and colour etc.. of the diamonds and they verified their authenticity and value. They charged €25 as far as I can recall.

Unfortunately we live in Dublin so Cork is a bit of a drive away. Ive heard that if u get wedding bands designed in certain jewellers and then hand in the engagement ring they usually value them all together... hoping that might work.

It really would put me off getting anymore jewellery outside Ireland.

When I was renewing house insurance last year, I wanted to get all jewellery re-valued so that individual items could be listed on the policy. I contacted two well-known jewellery auction houses, but they do not offer this service and referred me to Weirs. Weirs told me I'd have to leave the items with them for 12 weeks, and in the run-up to Christmas (this was August!) possibly up to 16-20 weeks! I asked whether my items would be covered by Weirs' insurance should anything happen them, and was told 'no', it would be up to me to arrange my own cover for the period they were out of my possession. Parkviewbuye, will be interested to see how you get on, as I never bothered in the end and have anxiety pangs about it every couple of weeks.

Hi Parkviewbuy

I haven't used them yet, but ESL Jewellers in Powerscourt Townhouse Centre are supposed to be good for valuing jewellery - we bought my engagement ring in Antwerp and went into ESL before Christmas but they were too busy to do any valuations so said to come back around February - i haven't made it in yet  but I will do soon... they value it on the spot for you and it costs about €50 as far as I know...

Thanks a million. I phoned them and a very helpful lady there told me to drop in to them with the diamond certificate and $ value certificate I have. She said that they can take copies and then forward me a valuation. I have my engagement ring being re-sized at the moment in B J Fitzpatricks so as soon as I get it back on Friday (hopefully) I am going to pop into ESL Jewellers.

Ill let u know how I get on. It will be so nice to finally have all this sorted. I wouldnt mind but we have it valued in $ with a signed document from the jewellers we got it from. Talk about mission impossible.. tom cruise eat ur heart out :)

For Dubs - Stillorgan Jewellers in Stillorgan Shopping Centre gives valuations on items not actually purchased there. Robbie's a gentleman to deal with. (not affiliated! - just like to recognise professionals when I come across them).

Thats great. Thanks a million. Does he take the jewellery for a few days to value and how much does he charge?

Hi Parkviewbye

I've heard some horror stories about rings being left in for valuation and the jeweller removing the diamond and replacing it with an inferior diamond that looks identical to the original. Is there any truth in this or has anyone heard of it happening?
We have to get a ring valued and I'm just a bit weary after hearing this story

Seems to be one of those urban myths, i.e. i've heard it often but never spoken to someone it actually happened to or come across an otherwise substantiated case.

That said when we got our engagement ring valued i insisted on both it being same day and on being present while it was done. It is complete nonsense for certain jewellers to require the ring be away for weeks at a time and uninsured during the process.

Yes I have seen a documentary about that. Seemingly it happens in Dubai a lot but Im not sure about here. I have my engagement ring being resized at the moment and Ive been having nitemares about it I can tell u.

I dropped it in on Monday evening and its going to be hopefully ready tomorrow ! Its a reputable jewellers but im still worried all the same.At least we have it insured though.

Hi
Has anyone had a diamond engagement ring valued recently in Dublin preferably where they value ring there and then? If so, any recommendations?

Many thanks!

We got my engagement ring in South Africa and had the same problem regarding a valuation for insurance. There is a jeweller called Carol Clarke in Royal Hibernian Way (Off Grafton Street) who advertised in the Irish Times as sepcialising in jewellery valuations for insurance purposes for items that were bought abroad. She took all the measurements and details and checked everything in the ring while I was standing there. The ring never left my sight. She sent all the details off and within 5 days I received a full valuation report by post. It cost about €60. A lot of jewellers will try to charge a percentage (surely it's the same amount of work involved no matter what the value???) of the valuation but she has fixed prices. It is also necessary to give her a call to make an appointment.

We went to ESL in Powerscourt Shopping Centre. Like Beam me up we the ring was never out of our site.

I showed them our diamond certificate and they wrote down the details. We paid €50 and withing 3 days we got the valuation.

They were really nice and we got a nice surprise because our ring was valued double the price we bought it for :D
