Children and Medical Cover

Hello,
I am currently a BUPA "Essential Plus" subscriber on behalf of my wife, three young children (8,7 and 4) and myself.

Some time back a friend suggested that there is really no upside in actually insuring the 3 kids on the scheme, particularly as there are no private hospitals for children.

So if I were to simply 'drop' them from the policy until such time as they are more likely to want (need?) a private room and service - be that when they are teenagers or ever ...

Any downside to this choice?
Any upside, other than saving a couple of hundred euros a year ?

Thanks for any insights,
Y

There are no private hospitals for children, but you can still have your child treated privately with the consultant of your choice and if surgery is an option, then it might be able to arrange it to suit your dates.

Its a sad fact about Irish life that holders of private medical insurance get preference.

If your child needed surgery which was not life threatening, but important, you could be waiting a lot time without health insurance,
The private room is irrevelant, but the access to surgery is not.
