I knew it couldn't last 104 and 156 rates of tax.

Motorist pays vat vrt on vat fuel charges through the roof
Not to mention the 2% quinn levy on insurance.
The car is an ongoing black hole of money and taxes.

Now this motorist is yet again an easy target. Band B is a 44% increase absolute disgrace.

You start by saying "I know it couldnt last", so you obviously thought you were paying a fairly low price for your car tax.

I was paying €104 and it was great. But €160 isn't that bad considering.

There's a whole lot more disgraceful things in this country than this car tax rise imho.

Frank no harm but you're a little naive if you thought the greener rates would continue at the low level. Over the next few years these rates will continue to rise as more and more of the cars on the old rates come off the roads. So by say 2015 I fully expect the rates on post 2008 cars to be up around the pre 2008 rates again. The total take from motor tax is all that will matter to the government so as more and more people move onto newer cars the less the take will be unless they continue to up the rate. So enjoy the Band B rate of €225 while it lasts cause it certainly won't remain that low over the coming years!

So far this year, ~96% of cars purchased have been in the top 3 emission bands (the lower tax bands). That's up from 41% in 2007. As a result, total revenue was falling, no way they were going to allow that continue.

Pre 08 +3000cc is nearly 500 euro cheeper than band G. Thats encouraging for all the car lovers out there.
