Telephone number mnemonics - worth it ??

I know its just a gimmick but does anyone think its a good idea to use telephone number mnemonics as a marketing ploy ?
for example "1800 + letters" signage on the side of a van or in the Golden Pages might not make sense to a lot of people - for some reason it doesn't seem to have taken off here like it did in the U.S.
I believe it costs €5 + vat per month to pick the digits with eircom, maybe its not worth it if a lot of potential customers don't really understand it ?

For anyone who has a Blackberry or other phone with qwerty keyboard layouts, the letters/numbers won't translate.

It helped people remember numbers back in the days before the internet and cell phones, where you store a number and forget it.

Personally, if I saw a service with words rather than a number I would ignore it and go for one with a number.

You can also display the number.

It can help people remember your number, it'd depend on the type of business.

5 euros a month is pretty cheap.... even one or two calls might make it worthwhile.
