Motor Switching Car insurance midterm - permitted?

Looks like I need to switch car insurance. Need to add an aupair to my policy and my current insurer do not permit anyone to be added to the policy unless they have resided in Ireland for past three years. It's due for renewal end of Jan.

I paid the premium up front last January.

Is it permitted to switch now?
Will I get a partial refund?
Are the current insurers obliged to give me my no claims bonus cert midterm?

You can switch anytime. The rules on refunds depend on the insurer, but generally if there has been no claims, a pro-rata refund should apply; ask the UW this, and argue the case if they get stroppy.

I assume you have a full NCB, so switching shouldn't impact on it, and the company should issue a NCB cert on request. BTW make sure you have no lapse in cover between change-over.

some times its best to put your policy on hold until the term runs out then they will refund.

if you ask for a refund early they will charge you a cancelation in most cases of €40-8€0

I don't think that they can simply put that condition on the policy. It would not be fair and equitable to our EU brethern. I'd ask insurer again and take it up with the Equality Commission.
