Motor Van insurance to Car insurance - ongoing claim

Hi
My husband crashed his van and the assessor has given him the option of writing it off as the damage was substantial. It would suit us for him to change to a car instead as we have 2 kids and the van isn't ideal. The problem is that while there is an ongoing claim his insurance co will not provide him with a new quote for a car. They also said they may not insure him at all. He has never had a claim before. There was another car involved and I assume they are also claiming on his insurance so this could be ongoing for some time yet. We can't move things on and search for a replacement vehicle when we dont know what his insurance will be. They wont even give him an idicative quote. Any advice on what we can do?

His current insurers MUST give a quote. Go back, ask to speak with supervisor. If no luck, ask again to be put in touch with a higher person. Keep names of all those you speak to.

Thanks Ravima. We tried them again and they're sending us out a form for their underwriters. Once they get that back from us they say they may be able to quote us.

There should not be any 'may'. They are obliged to. You are probably dealing with someone on the phone. This is what happens with some of the low cost phone insurers. They sell the cheapest policy, with the lowest service. They tend not to have experienced underwriting staff on the end of the phone.

Perhaps in the future, you should consider either a broker or dealing IN PERSON at the desk of one of the direct insurers.
