We are going to South America for our honeymoon in early August starting in Santiago, probably for two nights and a furthur nights which maybe hiring a car and heading to Valpariso. We have no hotels booked there yet but the Orly in Santiago is a possibility. From Chile we go to Buenos Aires for five nights staying in the Claridge hotel, then its on to Iguazu falls where due to bad flight times we won't arrive on the Argentinian side until late afternoon on the first day and we had planned to go to to the Brazilian side the next day followed by our departure to Rio De Janeiro the day after. Whats the best strategy for sightseeing the at Iguazu given our limited time, we have no hotels booked there yet. We are staying in the Porto Bay Rio Internacional on Copacabana for six nights them home. Has anyone stayed in any of these hotels and suggestions for hotels places to go in Chile and Iguazu in particular would be welcome. Whats the weather like in South America, presumably from Iguazu it should be pleasant even though its winter, what about costs and general advise for the whole trip, thanks.

Re: Tipa and advise for a South American honeymoon.

It sounds like you are trying to cover vast amounts of ground here and missing alot of very beautiful places in between the cities which you plan to travel to. If you have your heart set on your current plan then go for it. If you are open to suggestions though, I would say leave Iguazu out...it is spectacular but if you travelled south from Santiago and went to Torres del Paine and crossed into Argentina and went to the Perito Moreno glacier and maybe down to Fitzroy. You could then fly from El Calafate to Buenos Aires or Rio in about 3-4 hours. By the way, I wasnt blown away by Buenos Aires. A very vast city which only really comes alive late at night. Maybe Rio would be better and use the spare days to see the beautiful countrysides? Enjoy your honeymoon anyway.

...oh also meant to say that in the event that you do travel to Iguazu, dont expect great accommodation. It is different to other places....has the look of a place that had alot of money invested maybe 30 years ago and was then let fall to rack and ruin!

Thanks for that Newbie, unfortunately we have already booked the flights to the aforementioned places and have to stick to that itinerary, thats interesting about Iguazu, I think I read somewhere else where people felt a threating atmosphere within the town of Iguazu, anyway we won't be there for too long.

For Iguazú Falls, stay in the park near the falls in the Internacional Iguazú Resort Hotel, it’s now run by Sheraton. Well worth it as its close to the falls, near the nature trails etc. Don’t bother hiring a car to drive to Valparaiso. It’s a dump, but if you really want to see shantytowns, it’s do-able as a day trip by bus from Santiago. Buenos Aires is one of the world’s great cities, especially if you are into hanging out in bars, restaurants, cafes, etc. Be sure to visit Café Tortoni http://www.cafetortoni.com.ar/
