Replacing Head Gasket

Apart from regular service; watching temperature gauge and the level of coolant is there anything else one should do to lessen the need to have the head gasket replaced.
 
put in headgasket in google and watch which car type has most hits - avoid the one
if you already own THE ONE, check the coolant very regularly and also for antifreeze smell in the car, also watch for the engine performance, e.g. not enough power where there used to be - when the gauge starts going up, it's too late
 
oh, not sure if still actual, but if the headgasket has blown due to engine overheating and the coolant in the engine, have the water pump checked and changed
