Terminating temporary contract

I was given a temporary contract last April 2012 for a three month period. This had a 1 month notice period attached to it. Since the temporary contract ended in July 2012 I have still been in employment with the same company (although contract was not renewed/reviewed) but its just kind of rolled along.

I have now found another job but was wandering how much notice I should/have to give my current employer.
 
How have they treated you? Do you think that you owe them a months notice, 2 weeks notice a days notice.

If you have no contract then there is no requirement for notice but I would like to see employees give some notice so that the employer has some time to find a replacement.
 
Give a month's notice, if you can whether obliged to or not. You may require a Reference at some point.
 
They haven't treated me badly as such, but I've worked hard while I've been there. I think however having an earlier start date with the new employer would be a significant advantage.
