How to preserve the wood in a garden bench?

We have two garden benches, metal ends with wooden slats running between them. I think the wood is just pine or something, the benches were quite cheap. One year I tried sanding them carefully, and painting them with about 3 coats of outdoor varnish with stain (it might have been ronseal, it was stuff made for outdoor woodwork) but it started flaking off within a week.

Would something like teak oil, or fence life work better?

I painted my garden bench, similar to yours, with various "sale" paints that most paint shops sell, over the years. The type you find in the returns section or dented tins section. You can pick up 2.5 litres for as little as €5. Over the years my garden bench has enjoyed a makeover every year and has had various colours.
In the end it lived for about 15 years. The wooden seat bit finally rotted through and couldn't be saved. The metal arms are probably on the way back to China as we speak. It probably cost me about £50 to purchase from Woodies.
