I'd like some advice on reed beds as a form of treating sewage from a house (as opposed to the use of a septic tank).

I presume you'd need planning permission to have one installed, but how difficult would it be to get it?

Also, what surface do they usually cover (i.e. how much land would one need)?

Are they effective?

How much would it cost approximately to install one?

Thanks.

Re: Reed Beds

septic tank treatment is Primary treatment....
percolation areas and filter beds are Secondary treatment....
reed beds are Tertiary treatment....

reed beds cannot be used instead of septic tanks.. only in conjunction...

I came across this old post while trying to find information on Reed beds. Does anyone know how they work ? I currently have a septic tank and a percolation system, neither of which are working too well at the moment. Problems include odour and constant wetness in surrounding ground. Can a Reed bed be installed after a percolation area to further clean the treated water prior to it being discharged into a water course. Hoping Someone can advise. Thanks in advance
