severence pay

I just got laid off/ let go from my part time job on thursday. They told me they didn't need me after this monday. That is a 5 day notice. Am I entitled to some sort of severence pay. I got laid off just because they wanted to get rid of my position and had nothing to do with work performance. The job was part time but was not temporary and I have been working there since august of 2002.

Have a look at from the Government's Oasis website.

The employer can let you go and you are not entitled to any severance pay, just the minimum notice period of one week plus any holiday pay you are due.

You are there less than a year, so there is no unfair dismissal angle on this one, and you indicate that the work just is not there any more.

You said that the work was part time, but not temporary, however, it does appear that it was temporary as there is no need for it now and your employer can legitimately employ a 'causal employee' for a fixed duration.
