Have I Been Headhunted?

I received a Linkedin message from somebody who works in recruitment asking me to contact them as they have positions i may be suitable for. Out of curiosity i replied, and received a phone call today. There are 2 positions he wanted to discuss with me - one i disregarded as i would not feel challenged or get job satisfaction. The other i said i did not have the suitable experience (very specific industry) but apparently this isn't an issue, they would be willing to train to bring in line with standards.

Other candidates have been put forward for interview, but the company would like me to consider applying. I asked about the obvious things, how much travel involved, flexibility etc. and benefits package (rough guideline). I was asked what i was on now, so i gave a figure of my P60 takehome last year +€10k. They said it wouldn't be a problem. I am thinking 'Jeez.....'

I have asked for the company name and information and been sent a link to look over. Question is, wondering if i am being silly to consider it? I am in a very stable job at the moment, good money etc. and it's a challenging role (new one would be more challenging in a specific industry). Opinions please.....

If you gave your net pay plus 10k and they match it, you won't be much if any better off. It might be no harm to investigate this but be wary of registration fees, chrages for this and that.

Surely if they match the current pay plus an additional 10k on top of it then he is 10K better off...an extra 10K a year would be worth investigating

The OP said net pay plus 10K. When changing jobs its almost always gross salary thats given so he needs to be careful they dont take his net + 10K as what he expects as gross. To be honest I dont know why he mentioned net at all, always use gross for salary is the done think IMO

She :p

I was told it would be at least 10k better off, plus i statwed that my P60 was €x.... That would be substantial plus it would be in a very desirable area of expertise so future prospects could be good, although i would have to discuss that in depth with somebody.

Slim, what registration fees etc. would be incurred? Surely if somebody approaches me, the company looking would be responsible etc?

+1 -- might be worth clarifying this with them Flossie

Alarm bells ring immediately here, the recruitment market is dead so recruitment consultants may have to come up with novel ways of justifying their salary.

What could happen here Flossie is that you meet with consultant and find that the position has "just been filled but is it ok to keep your details on file just in case anything else comes up?".

You waste a day but consultant fills his empty diary with a meeting and registers a new client thus keeping his job for a while more. Call me cynical if you like but LinkedIn seems to be solely occupied by recruitment consultants hunting for business.

Hopefully I'm wrong though.

Hi,

I am currently working in recruitment and regularly contact people on linkedin I think are suitable for roles I am working. I have also been headhunted myself from linkedIn.

Contrary to what NorfBank says I am actually up to my eyes at the moment with live jobs I am actively recruiting for and have a real shortage of suitable candidates so don't dismiss it out of hand.

Check out the recruitment company in question to make sure they are a reputable one and never agree to let them send in your CV without you knowing exactly who it is going to.

Good luck!

I am with NorfBank on this one but tml's advice is sound.

I have been headhunted from all corners of the world on LinkedIn - usually offered positions that matched some word I had in my profile from ten years ago or targetting other aspects I really wouldn't care about. The offers are usually somewhat vague or just requests to connect and or keep my CV on file.

If it sounds to good to be true, it usually is.

Having said that, follow tml's advice. If they can prove themselves to you then you could consider it.

Thanks guys, appreciate all the words. I am going to have a think about it over the weekend and study the job spec i was sent. I have been provided with the name of the company who the role is with so on Monday i will call them and ask if they are actively recruiting for the role. I know my current employer makes me fairly desirable within the industry so could possibly be legit. Unless it is kosher i will ask them not to contact me again, just this particular role could be intersting and challenging.

Thanks once again :)

The other i said i did not have the suitable experience (very specific industry) but apparently this isn't an issue, they would be willing to train to bring in line with standards.

This is the part that makes the alarm bell ring very loudly for me. So many unemployed out there at the moment and they are going to spend money to train someone.

I am in a very stable job at the moment, good money etc. and it's a challenging role

With the job scene being so rough at the moment think long and hard before you consider moving.

The Facebook privacy settings constantly resets and is full of holes. It can't be trusted in my opinion. A few times I've discovered Facebook made my email address, phone number and address there 100% public even to non friends. Giving away my email address in particular is a huge security error. Therefore I wiped my Facebook and hardly ever use it now.

As for LinkedIn , I don't get that either. Surely you tailor your CV to each job application whereas your one profile on LinkedIn would be presenting only one face to the world ?

Concerning the recruitment agent, I'd be suspicious of recruitment agencies as they often advertize non existent jobs to make themselves look busier plus I'd be double suspicious about anyone who contacts me through the internet especially if (since the name of the agency was not given) you are unfamiliar with them or if they want to charge an upfront fee before you get any results out of them.

Sue Ellen, the industry is very specialised....it is more like i would be doing a similar role to what i am doing but focusing in another area, and that area is not present in Ireland (job involves lots of clients in mainland Europe, nuclear industry) so would be unusual to have people there. Current role is quite desirable to lots of companies as the company have a very good reputation for training. But yes, i can see your point and i will ask that when i speak with the firm on Monday.

Totally get your point about moving. I am hoping to get a mortgage at the end of next year and don't want to jeopardise that. Worry that if i were to leave a new role and didn't enjoy it i am being left in a creek of undesirable sorts! :D

Anyways, nice to feel wanted, in a strange way!

Just updating on this.....

Sat and had a very long hard think about the situation and decided I am happy where i am for now. I'm in a good, stable job and the company has an awful lot available to me.

Thanks for advice though,

Floss.

Good decision on your part, I would be very wary if a recruitment agent contacted me as has happened in the past, No offence to them but they are salespersons and the best of them have the ability to sell you something you dont want, Commission based earning structures.
