Motor Question re: claim payment

My car was damaged recently in a neighbouring farmer's yard, there was no issue over liability and his insurers wrote to me informing me of same. I rang them today and asked how payment was to be made. I was told that a cheque would be paid either directly to the garage or directly to me on supply of an invoice from the garage.

Is this usual? Is it not my decision whether I want to repair the car (its purely cosmetic damage) or to continue driving it in it's damaged and reduced-value state? I would have thought that when the value of the damage is agreed by the assessor, that cheque would be issued to me to do with as I please.

if you want cash in lieu, there is usually no difficulty in having cheque made out to you. It will be for the ex VAT figure as you have not incurred the VAT.
