My husband & I are in the middle of filling out an application for a Council house in Cork. We have chosen Carrigaline as our first choice as our son will be attending the school there.

Does anyone know how long we can expect to be on the waiting list? I'm thinking in the 4 year region. Am I being too hopeful?

We haven't a chance of buying ourselves as husband earns €30k & our rent is €950pm so nothing left to save for deposit

Re: Social housing in Carrigaline, Cork

hi...if you go on to the cork city council website u might get some information regarding average waiting times..just get the application in asap..it is usually 4yrs plus..and with one child it is possibly an apartment u would be offered

Re: Social housing in Carrigaline, Cork

Thanks for that. I thought apartments were usually offered to one person or one person with one child? didnt think they would be for 2 adults & one child. That would be very cramped. My husbands cousin just got keys to a 4 bedroom house & she is single with one child. Now thats in cork city so might be different to county council. Where would i get that info? On council website?

Re: Social housing in Carrigaline, Cork

are u sure that person got a 4bed house under social housing..or is it under affordable housing???because a 4 bed house would never be offered to a person with one child under social/llocal authority housing

Re: Social housing in Carrigaline, Cork

The kind of home you are offered would be dependent on what stock they have in that area. I doubt the Co Co have apartments there as Carrigaline is still relatively rural. They will probably offer you a 3 bed.

Hate to sound pessimistic but the county council's system is notoriously politicised and if you are working you could be waiting more than 4 years as they still prioritise welfare and there are a lot of these (ironically you are probably far worse off if Suzanne Kellys calculations are correct).

Thanks for the replies. We sent in application 3 months ago & are on a waiting list to go on THE waiting list, mad! We are now also expecting another baby so i hope we dont wait 4/5 years for an apartment. My husbands cousin def got a 4 bed house under social housing. She was waiting only one year but its in a rough part of cork city which is maybe why she got it so fast?. So its just a waiting game now. We did tick yes on form for voluntary housing such as cluid or respond, does anyone know the typical waiting time? My friend lives in herons wood in carrigaline & said there are 2 council houses in her row of houses empty since she moved in 2 years ago that havent been allocated yet, bit strange

It still dosen't justify why she was given a 4 bed house.

100 people waiting for social housing in Carrigline

"The reality is that there is very little hope for those on the social housing list. The downturn in the economy is only likely to see these figures increase and something needs to be done to provide suitable housing for these people".

Makes you quite bitter actually to hear that. I've been slogging my guts out to get a deposit together by working three jobs and she was just handed one by waiting a year. Regardless of the area, she was offered a 4 bed house, something I will most likely not see for at least 10 years.

Don't be bitter, be proud of what you are working towards, it will give you a great sense of purpose and achievement, often when people get things for nothing they don't appreciate it.

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.

regarding social housing transfers

hi
i was wondering has any one ever done a mutual exchange with social/local authority housing in cork?as in swapping from council to cooperation council?and if so did they have any problems?

Remember the OP and her husband are Working. Possibly in Jobs we often fill with immigrants. They pay their social insurance. Believe me, a seven bedroom house in faranree wouldn't tempt most posters in this thread.

Lived in a second floor maisonette apartment with one baby and two adults for three years, up and down the them outside concrete steps with everything! Private rent of £90 to €145 a week. Moved to a mobile home to save money for house building (two bedroom but soo cold we had to use one bedroom). We both worked every job we could get at the time.

I am familiar with a social housing estate in a small village in Midlands, single parent with one child have a whole three bedroom house to themselves and there is three such families. One even got a brand new kitchen put in when she moved in, house was only three years old. Eventually when a family has couple kids, free extension built on. It really did bother me for a good few years when I see the wastage of money that goes on it that estate. There is never any or very little incentive to work, save money, have a decent car, give up smoking/socialising etc. I see trees being planted, wrecked by kids etc.

I watched the programme about the "Bedroom Tax" in England. Ireland should look at this.

I completely agree some families need help. We needed help years ago (never asked for it), struggling with a small baby/bills etc but thankfully got through it. I really feel housing should be given for a fixed time period of say 5 years, let people work and save until then, if a review needed so be it. I know we didnt have another child for 8 years as simple couldnt afford one never mind two or more.

All the more social insurance they paid. Their money. Not your money, not our money. Their money.

I would be very happy to accept a 7 bedroom house in Farranree, or a 3 bedroom house for that matter. I can't speak for most posters on this thread but I don't know what you have against an area that you obviously don't live in and more than likely know little or nothing about.

As for "Jobs we often fill with immigrants".....I'm not sure what you're point is
here?

Really good idea. Might also help to break the cycle of dependency on social housing that seems to run through generations in some families.

Hi Emma, it probably wouldn't do any harm to approach a local TD or counselor and explain your circumstances. They may not be able to move people up or down the housing list, but they can definitely ask questions internally in the department and perhaps speed up the allocation of houses in you're desired area, especially if there are idle houses. You've got nothing to lose by getting in touch with one of them. I've seen examples of where people have done this and it certainly helped.

The original post dates from 11th January 2010 and things have likely moved on (for better or worse) since then.

Emma still posts on AAM occasionally the following is a recent reply from her earlier this year.

Could you cut back on food? 500/600 seems very high. We are a family of 4 & spend 200 euro a month on food shopping & that includes nappies/wipes etc. Get rid of Sky too & maybe think of getting saorview, can you use either mobil or landline & cut back there. Try & pay gas over 12 months at a set amount, turn down the thermostat too. Its

hard but once you cut out things you see that you dont need all of them. We have 372 euro a week total for a family of 4 & 200 of that alone goes on rent, we sold our car & use public transport, we layer up at home & turn heating off more often than we used to. Our cb goes straight off credit union loan, maybe see if you can consolidate your own loans. Also mabs are fantastic. We found them very helpful & while things are very tight we have been able to cut back alot. Best of luck

Well its been a few years since I posted this thread. We are now waiting 4 years so far. Husband out of work 3 years & 2 small children (both conceived while he was employed i should add :) ) There seems to be very little information or people in general chatting about how long they were waiting to be offered housing. I cant find out how long people are waiting on average to be housed in carrigaline. I dont know if we are near being offered or may have another 4 years to wait. Are there any other sites I could try? Council wont tell me anything at all just that there are thousands waiting in general. Are there any tds or councillors that would help or do councillors have access to information about how many are waiting for a certain area etc?
