Maternity leave. Interest only?

I am going to maternity leave later this year and my work will not be paying me anything so will have the SW payment and my husbands salary coming in. We intend to save as much as we can between now and then to bridge this gap.

I am tempted to ask the bank can we go interest only to make this period easier. My aim is to not rely on this extra money but use it if needed and pay a lump sum off the mortgage at the end of the 6 months with whatever we don't need.

My question is whether this is sensible. Will it affect how the bank view us in the long run? I know it will cost us more but will 6 months (hopefully less) of interest only make a material difference? and while I know I need to ask them the question yet but anyone know whether they are likely to agree to this? It's AIB by the way.

Any thoughts welcome.
