Hi,
I have a CC that expired in Oct 2013 and have not received a new card.
Have a balance of 900 on it that I'll pay off over the next 6 months or so, finishing it up around May.
Does anyone know if the the Gov Duty in April will apply to this card balance?

Thanks

Why did you not receive the new card? Did you ask them to not send one?

You have to actually pay off the balance and close the account to no longer be liable for the stamp duty.

Please note that the credit card stamp duty is paid in arrears. If you wait until May to close the account, not only will you have to pay the stamp duty in April but also pay it again in May when you close the account.

i.e. The stamp duty is due on April 1st for the preceding year, the new year starts on April 2nd. So if you close the card now you will have to pay the duty due from April 2nd 2013. If you close it in March 2014, you will pay the same duty. However if you close it after April 2nd 2014 you will be charged the 2013/2014 duty on 1st April and also the duty for 2014/2015 when you close it.

You should receive a letter confirming closure of account. If you are changing to another provider you don't have to pay the duty twice. Just send the letter to your new card issuer.
