Hi,
We are in the middle of a build & our electrician has put in a quote for the house alarm which seems quite reasonable (relative), the only thing is he's not registered, will this be a problem when getting house insurance?

Thanks,
Aishling

It's not valid for home insurance purposes without the certification. However, on another note, having an alarm taken into account when shopping for home insurance could trip you up - as if the alarm is not activated at the time of a break-in (should it happen), the insurance company can wash their hands of it.

To my knowledge, this is the case where the house is unoccupied at the time - not sure if they enforce this ..say..in a scenario where burglars break in while someone is at home...?

Basically it depends on the insurer you take your policy out with. Some will give a different level of discount for basic bell alarm (electrician installed), an NSAI approved alarm or a monitored alarm. Some insurers will have a condition that the alarm be set before a theft will be covered. Check the T&C's of the insurer involved.

Thats fine if you chose to put your own in. But otherwise alarm instalers must be registered with the PSA under Private Security Services Act.
