Cheapest and efficient stock broker online?

I was to invest some money in the stockmarket in both the irish and the international markets. Initially I am looking at the International markets like the US and India.

Can you recommend to me the most cost effective, efficient and trustworthy way to do this?

Can set up an account online and just buy the shares that way?
