Hi,

I have a detached garage, 18Ftx13ft which I am hoping to convert to a self contained living unit, I am going to insulate as much as possible but I am wondering which source of heating would be the most efficient?.

Do you have the required planning permission to carry out that conversion?

Gas is the most efficient form of conventional space heating. Is that an option? The SEAI fuel comparison gives the price per delivered kWh for the various heating methods. At that size, it's unlikely any renewable source will be cost effective.

That is a small living unit. Off the top of my head
Insulate - as you said. Then, as I once read, the only heat you have to put in is how much you lose.
So, ensure air tightness, and install Mechanical heat recovery ventilation MHRV.

Get the two done by reputable tradesmen to a high standard.

If the above two are done well, then a stove or small electric heater would keep the space warm. Even cooking and body heat would meet a lot of the demand.

I'm not a heating/building/engineer.

And as Leo said, all planning and building regs must be taken into account.

You need to speak to your County Council 1st and then apply for planning permission before you do anything to the garage in order to live in it.
