Slight leak in old tap - Too costly to replace

I have a bath tap that has a smallish leak. In order to replace it I'd need to do serious work in getting the old taps off so looking for a cheaper option. The tap itself is too tight to even get the middle cover off as it's 50 years old. Ideally I want to 'plug' the tap similar to the old beer barrels which had a wooden stopper hammered into it. Given that I would most unlikely have a chance to dry it completely, does anyone know what and where I would get a stopper that would do the job ? The tap is not a round tap it's a stadium shape.
