Kitchen unit resurfacing: anyone have this done recently?

Hi all,

I'm looking to change my kitchen unit doors, but not the actual units.

They're only in 4 years, but the surface is peeling off of them due to condensation in the kitchen(veneer over some sort of chipboard/mdf I think)..

The doors comprise of
4 standard doors,
7 longer (200 mm) doors,
4 drawers,
and some pelmeting.

I have been quotes €950 for this, including labour.
Does this sound reasonable?

Does anyone have an recommendations for someone they may have used.

I am not going down the Ikea route, because I wouldn't be able to match the extra bits (eg extra pelmeting under the integrated gas cooker for example)

Thanks for any advise, the place looks a bit horrible at the moment.
Money is tight though...

previous threads might help. If you run the search option yourself in this forum only you may find some others also.

it's hard to say.

You can check prices of kitchen doors on www.woodworkers.ie

Say about 40 per smaller door, and about 60 for bigger ones.

You need eleven doors and four drawers and pelmet, that's a lot, and going on rough prices from Woodworkers it adds up to about 600 to 700 or so... assuming the guy gets a trade discount he'll pay less, say 350 to 600. (depending on the quality and finish of the doors he buys)

If he's paying taxes and he does a good job then I think the price is good.

thanks guys, I appreciate the replies, and opinion. Interestingly, one of the trades men I spoke to yesterday, suggested sourcing from Ikea, then they could install, alternatively they have various suppliers they use. I have now got varying quotes from 400 to 1600. There's a firm out in Fair view who seem very good, so I'm going to see about getting them out to look at my (tiny) kitchen, and quote. I'll report back if and when I manage to get it done. Nicola. Ps apologies for no paragraphs, I am online from a phone

I saw an ad for a company called Dream Doors who seem to specialise in this type of job. I emphasise I know absolutely nothing about them so can't give a recommendation. Their no is 4928793 and they appear to give 10% discount to Sundrive Road Credit Union members if you happen to be one :D

P.S. www.woodworkers.ie get plenty of recommendations on AAM.

Hi all
Thanks for the recomendation for woodworkers.ie, seems like an excellent place.

I have had someone out to see the kitcken, he has quoted 600-700 for the doors (woodworkers.ie quoted online prices, but he doesn't seem to be getting a discount) and 600 for the labour.

600 to me seems an awful lot, as the carcasses are not being replaced, so essentially it's just the doors and drawers being rehung.
I would have thought that this would take less than a day to do?

Any thoughts welcome re this labour cost (or recomendations for someone that you might have used, in Dublin)

Thanks in advance

Nicola

600 labour - I'll do it for 25% that!

11 doors with four hinge-screws each to be un-fastened off the old doors and then fastened on the new doors (I assume the handles are in situ, if not allow time for two more screws per door unit) 12 screws X 11 doors X 15 seconds per screw - say 35 minutes.

4 drawer-fronts with 4 screws each to be un-fastened and then fastened (allow 2 extra screws for handles) 12 screws x 4 drawer fronts x 15 sceonds per screw - say 15 minutes

Thats less than 1 hour for the doors and drawers plus whatever the bit of pelmet takes - say 2 hours max in total.

That's exactly what I was thinking!

Thanks for that Mathepac.

I wish I was handy and could do it myself, but I'd botch it up

Doors & drawer fronts will have to be drilled first, but even that doesn't add a lot of time to the job. Someone who does this for a living should have a template for that.

€600 labour is ridiculous based on my recent experience.

We just a got (smallish, admittedly) entire flatpack kitchen installed (about 10 units + worktops + sink) for just over €400.

Seems high alright for labout. We got a cash and carry kitchen last year. Guy installed whole kitchen for €500. 12 doors ( 2 on integrated appliances) (1 x folding corner door) 5 drawers, cooker hood, pelmets and all else.

The price for fitting should obviously depend on the difficulty of the job and the desired standard.

Fitting to a very high standard takes a lot longer than just fitting... and so the people offering cheaper prices are probably going to do the work more quickly and probably won't work to as high a standard.

This is very tricky... for example, the guys who installed Caveats kitchen for 400 didn't give themselves much wriggle room... if they encounter problems they will have no choice but to solve them as quickly as possible, they may not have time or money to use the most appropriate solution. And what can they say if Caveat says 'well, that's less than perfect.. can you re-do it?'...

There's a good chance that the OPs job won't be as easy at it sounds... who knows what shortcuts the original fitters used, and what problems there may be?

I think the initial quote of 950 sounds pretty good.

Thanks all.

I have spoken to someone who has quoted 500-800. depending what is involved.

I will post back with how it all works out
