I am really surprised someone hasn't posted about this yet. What on earth happened? I just heard there is also now a young girl who was at the concert now missing.

I drove past the park on Sunday afternoon, to say the aftermath was a dissagrace is an understatement

I was leaving work on Saturday and saw throngs of young people heading in the direction of the park. You could see it was a receipe for disaster. They were well and truely off their face before the concert even began. The clothes on some of the women or lack of was a disgrace.

I was in the Chapelizod area and didn't see a great Garda presence.

Wouldnt happen in John Charles McQuaids time.
But leaving aside the state of undress of some of the ladies I would be more concerned about the violence at the gig.

The organisers should have realised that the type of demographic attending Snoop Doggy Dog and Swedish House Mafia is completely different from other concerts planned over the summer and made appropriate plans.

Even I, as a conservative 42 year old know that people attending The Stone Roses would be completely different from those attending the two acts I name above.
But then maybe that is because I am "down with the kids". Clearly MCD arent as "down with the kids" as they should be.

It's funny - totally different crowd attended the concerts in London v Dublin (alo in London, they had airport style security). Apparently in Phoenix park it was a lad with a handheld scanner. Doesn't instill you with much confidence!

I have no idea about what happened on Sat night but I was there on Thursday night and it was about 7:30pm when we got there. As I was in the queue to be searched, I heard one of the girls say to another 'we've been told not to bother searching the girls bags, just let them on in2. I think this was because a crowd was beginning to arrive at that time but seriously...they just let people march on in with whatever was in their bags.

On another note, I've heard complaints about facilities. I personally thought they were fine, it was mucky and the toilets got a bit grim but I think you expect that! However outside the gig itself on the walk up from parkgate street, there was not one bin so glass bottles etc were being thrown in two foot long grass (lucky guy who has to mow that!). When we left that night, security told us that those heading to the city centre could go right (down chesterfield ave) or left (along the road the runs along the perimeter of the park and the back of the zoo). The road on the left did not have one light....honestly it was after 11pm at night in the pitch dark and no lights??? I thought that was appalling.

I believe he is called Snoop Dogg now. Get with it man!

In fairness, we don't need a concert in Ireland for gratuitous violence to rear its head. Our laws and our judiciary seem to be either unable or unwilling to deal with it.

I have heard from some young people I know who attended the gig that ecstasy was more freely available than they have ever seen it. At the likes of oxygen, attendees had to seek out drugs, at this event people were approached numerous times. A dreadful tragedy and I hope there are some lessons learned.

Also there were a lot of minors there, even though it was an 18+ event.

I've created a couple of online maps whereby I'm trying to crowdsource information on peoples experience of the 3 concerts in the Phoenix Park, specifically in relation to the general atmosphere and how people exited the park after the concert.

Simply click on the appropriate concert on the left, your experience and click on the map where you had this experience. If you moved around and encountered a number of contrasting experiences, add multiple points.

If your exit route was good/ok/bad at different parts of the journey, add separate lines for each part.

I appreciate this is completely subjective and have deliberately not asked for any details other than good/ok/bad.

I'm hopeful that if there is enough feedback patterns will emerge.

I have no connection with MCD or anyone else associated with the concerts.

Thanks.

I thought I posted this earlier, seems to have disappeared.

First point i'd like to make is that this was blown out of proportion, how many stabbings were there last weekend in towns of 45,000? Probably near enough to the 9 at the event, I'm not saying this is a good thing but it reflects society at large.

If everyone had been on ecstasy there would have been less violence. The violence was caused by alcohol and/or other drugs.

I'd like to know what the 115 Garda on duty at the event were actually doing because from all reports they did nothing. That there were so few arrests for drunk and disorderly at it is surprising given reports.

MCD should have refused entry to anyone drunk, very simple. The Garda should have been active in taking alcohol off those under-age and off anyone who was drunk.

You reckon that there were on average 9 stabbings per town of c.45k people?
I don't think that 9 stabbings at a concert should be regarded as par for the course, so it's hardly being blown out of proportion.

The deaths that were linked to the concerted have yet to confirm what drugs were used, but as we never know what is in ecstast then you can't rule that out either.
I don't think the violence can be attributed to alcohol that easily, because if you are bringing a knife to a concert in the first place, it kind of sets out your course for the day ahead.

If 9 stabbings among 45,000 people was representative of society at large, there would have been ~900 across the country that night.

Knife crime is included in the 'Attempts/threats to murder, assaults, harassments and related offences' category in recorded crime statistics. 2009 stats say there were a total of 18,308 such crimes recorded in that category across the country.

Reports last month that linked to the WHO report on reducing knife crime (where Ireland acknowledged a very serious problem in this area) spoke of a marked increase in stabbings, citing as an example, 5 incidents in Cork over a 4 week period.

Irish Autism Action had a fundraising event on Saturday at Richmond park (special guest was Steven Gerrard). After the event My daughter and husband decided to bring their autistic child to the zoo. They never made it. They were unaware of the concert but were alarmed when young teenagers were staggering in front of their car and around the road. In the interest of safety they abandoned the trip. They travelled to the zoo the following day, Sunday. Staff at the zoo told them they were lucky they got out of the area - it was horrendous around the zoo.

An A&E specialist in Beaumont Hospital called for people to take [broken link removed]for their actions. I particularly liked this quote.

“If you had say Christmas or say St Patrick’s Day on the 17th of March and the same set of people – and that typically does happen – came in, we wouldn’t be calling for the arrest of Santa Claus or St Patrick.”

Bad night in the Phoenix Park

Meanwhile garda stations across Dublin had their quietest night ever ;)
