Why is Newstalk absolutely obsessed with the Vatican Embassy non story?


From morning to evening each day of the week Newstalk are banging on about this minor little story. Does any one know why the do this?

Maybe Denis O'Brien feels strongly about it.

It's more then a minor little story to many people

and its probably a story thats going to get bigger in the weeks to come.

because it's probably a sign of conflict within the Govt...labour v FG. so could be the start of something bigger

my tuppence worth- should'nt have closed it. especially in the year fo the Eucharistic Conference. The potential to the economy of a Papal visit would pay for the embassy for the next 40 years given the small annual cost of running it

The cost of a Papal visit would be horrendous and I see no appetite for one either. The Vatican treated us badly over the whole abuse issue.

they did, but a visit would be a good way to mend fences. i think plenty of people would welcome it.

Gilmore is a joke making an issue out of this - we have well over 100 local authoritities and countless quangos.

Gilmore seems to be incapable of tackiling public sector wastage.

I’m not convinced about Gilmore either but undoing the damage done by Fianna Fail over the last decade and a half will take some time.
However bad this government turns out to be it won’t be as bad as the last one. From an economic perspective Bertie was the worst leader this country ever had; he took the worst of socialism and capitalism, mixed in a large dose of cronyism and incompetence and stirred.

Closing the Vatican Embassy was the right thing to do.
We should have expelled their Nuncio before he was recalled as he was the senior representative of a state that had engaged in sedition in this country, compelling Irish citizens to engage in treasonous activities by giving primacy to the laws of a foreign state, i.e. not reporting child rape to the authorities here but instead following orders given under the guidance of Cannon Law.

I would have thought it quite obvious that cost is not the primary reason but merely a prime example of taking full advantage of a good crisis.

A cost of embassys - but the vatican down the list.

The Labour party are now cutting school capitations whilst awarding their advisors 35K wage increases.

At the same time teachers getting far more than the EU average.

Gilmore knows nothing about getting value of out public spending.

Newstalk are right highlighting this.


Ms. Burton or Kenny no longer seem to want to appear with Vincent Brown - despite all their media advisors.

Cork, you have very strong pro-Fianna Fail views and are quite open about it which is to your credit but you seem to forget that the vast waste and over-payment of public sector employees that we now see is the result of FF policy over the last 10-15 years (not to mention the bigger problems they created). The current government may be open to criticism that they aren’t doing enough to fix the problems that were created by the last government but that’s about it.
Sound-bites about the cost of advisors diminishes the currency of any argument.
